I was a judge at a karaoke contest a few
years ago. There was an elderly singer who had won a lot of competitions among
the contestants. He was rather arrogant and confident that he would emerge the
champion. He was so cocksure of himself that he strutted and swaggered up on
stage.
However, he was upstaged by a young man
who sang very well, indeed. The cocky, old singer was placed second.
For
years after that whenever, I bumped into the runner-up with a group of his
friends, he would point me out to them and shout loudly and indignantly that I
was the one who had placed him second. His friends would appear surprised that
he had not won the contest.
I
did not let on to the disappointed man that among the three judges that I had
gone against my sense of fair play, knowing fully that the eventual winner was
a better singer, but had given the old
fellow top marks because I knew him. Of course, I was out-voted by the other
two judges.
I have
stopped accepting appointments to be a judge in singing contests after that.
