Distressing News from a Distant Past

During my very early teaching career, I used to cater my evening meals from an elderly lady. At dinner, there would be five of us  -  four young ladies and me. The ladies had just graduated from teacher training, too. We did things together after dinner. We would go for walks, shopping or to the cinema.

I was rather keen on one of the ladies. I was too shy, then, to date her alone, so five of us continued going out together after dinner. We lost total contact after I left for further specialist teacher-training.

Recently, I made contact with a friend on Facebook. I knew him when I was at that early teaching post. We haven't met for nearly half a century. We started to reminisce about the past. I then asked him about that particular lady I was keen on.

It seemed she fell deeply in love with a marketing executive, had a child with him and then he ditched her. Eventually, it seemed, she died of heartbreak. She passed away when she was very young, then.

I came away from the meeting, feeling rather dreadful and sad. I could not help but shed a few tears. What if I had been brave enough to date her alone?

I’m just as blue as the sky
Since love is gone,
Can’t pull myself together
Guess I’ll hang my tears out to dry.

Crow's Feet, Wrinkles, Jowls and All

I look into a mirror,
What do I see?
Crow's feet, wrinkles, jowls and all,
In the face staring back at me.

I'm elated,
That someone very much younger
Is blind to the crow's feet, wrinkles, jowls and all
Whenever she looks at me.

A Strong Circle of Love

How blithesome it is to have very filial children,
Widening this circle of love
By marrying spouses
Who will treat the parents with deference

And then having children,
Instilling in them the love for their grandparents.

The people who the sons and daughters find it hardest to understand are the fathers and mothers, but young people can get on very well with grandfathers and grandmothers.

A Fräulein From Bremen

I met a young, pretty girl from Bremen
When I was on holiday in Vienna, years ago
She spoke in German and in broken English
I spoke in English and in broken German
And we got on very well together.

After a teary "auf Wiedersehen" in Vienna,
We left for home
She, to Bremen
I, to my college in England
And we corresponded for a while
But then everything petered out to a goodbye.

I wonder what's happened to that fr
äulein from Bremen
With blonde hair and a pleasantly pretty face
I guess, she must have either after all these years,
Bumped up to a matronly lady
Or shrivelled to a skinny one
And consigned into  the oblivion of the past.

A Figment of My Imagination

Born a year ago,
My secret love  -
A figment of my imagination
But she seems so real.
Fair and petite,
But on the plump side,

I figure her to be twenty.

I fantasize her to be by my side,
Not in connubial bliss
But enjoying love in secret.
Coming out of the blue,
She would remain with me,
Unseen but ever present
In my aged fantasy!

Life is a masque that changes
A fig for constancy!
No love at all was better,
Than love which is not free.
